In 1968, Robert and Margaret Gimson bought a neglected farm in rural Galicia, where Robert made a garden of considerable horticultural interest. In spite of the well-known pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia is a relatively unknown corner of Spain, generally regarded as a wild, wet and windy place. The life of the people, outside a few towns, was then almost as it must have been in all rural Europe in past centuries.
